Former AFLW Geelong coach Dan Lowther is headed down the highway after being named Werribee’s new Victorian Football League coach.
The Tigers announced on Wednesday night that Lowther would take on the role, having coached Geelong’s AFLW role for the past five seasons.
Lowther guided that side from second-last in the season before his appointment, to back-to-back finals series.
That run included a preliminary final appearance in 2023, where they fell to eventual premiers Brisbane.
Werribee’s new coach also brings extensive AFL experience with Geelong, dating back 29 years.
Lowther played 34 AFL games for the club in the late 1990s across a six-year playing career.
He has since served as a VFL assistant coach, AFL analyst and AFLW assistant before being elevated to the senior role.
Werribee chief executive Mark Penaluna said they are incredibly excited to welcome Lowther as their senior coach.
“He brings an abundance of experience from his time coaching in the TAC Cup-Coates League, to the VFL and his most recent role in the AFLW,” Penaluna said.
“He has the right credentials to take over from Jimmy Allan and keep our club at the top of the VFL competition.”
Lowther said he’s extremely excited about the job at hand, and to land at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval.
“The opportunity to lead such a strong and respected club is a privilege and one I’m looking forward to,” he said. ”
“Stepping back into a men’s program was always a goal of mine and I’m looking forward to working with a young group of players and staff hungry for more success.”
Lowther is the 27th coach for Werribee.
He replaces premiership coach Jimmy Allan, who had been planning on coaching the side again, who has joined St Kilda as an assistant coach.
Allan is the third straight coach to depart the club to take on AFL coaching roles.
