Josh Corbett marks the day

Josh Corbett had a big role to play for Werribee in its Victorian Football League outing on Saturday night.

With the other Josh, key forward Josh Porter, unavailable for the historic clash with Casey Demons on a night when the Avalon Airport Oval redevelopment was to be unveiled, it was on Corbett to be Werribee’s focal point.

It was a role in which Corbett thrived, booting three goals and taking four contested marks.

“I like to pride myself on my marking ability,” he said. “That’s sort of one of my strong points and I try and do that as much as I can and let the smaller boys go to work [if the ball spills].”

Corbett has relished the chance to begin the year without the hiccups that plagued him in the first half of last season.

The 21-year-old’s 2017 season was frustratingly interrupted by a bout of glandular fever and an ankle injury.

Touch wood, Corbett will have a clear run at establishing himself in the Werribee team.

“It’s my first year [at Werribee] where I’ve been able to do a full pre-season,” he said. “That’s definitely been a huge bonus for me.

“Personally, I feel as though it’s the fittest I’ve felt.

“I’m a lot more composed in games and I’m able to make good decisions because I’m not so fatigued.”

He is excited by the direction Werribee is taking and in awe of the facilities provided for the team at the revamped Avalon Airport Oval.

“The Travelling Tigers last year, it was a bit tricky not having a home ground as such,” Corbett said.

“Now it’s such a great facility and we’re very lucky.”
