Hume City Broncos slip up

Hume City Broncos’ winning start to the Big V women’s state championship season is over, but it wasn’t without the Broncos putting up a fight.

In an early top of the table clash with the Keilor Thunder, the Broncos came from behind to level the scores and take the game to over time.

It was an even overtime period, with the Thunder getting home by one point, 71-70.

Broncos coach Dee Butler said it was the test that they needed to have.

“It would have been a good game to watch,” she said.

“Keilor was super aggressive and we haven’t had that amount of aggression in our other games. We will learn from the game and get stronger.”

It was an even game through out the night, with just one point separating the teams at half time.

The Thunder increased that lead to five points at the final change, before the Broncos responded.

Bulter said while she was disappointed with not getting the win, she was proud how they forced the game into over time.

“We were down and struggling to find a way to to get into the game. We were in foul trouble and we didn’t shoot the lights out.

“It was a good character test for the side to see who would stand up. We learnt a lot about ourselves individually and as a team.

“To get the game into over time was good. We did have chances late to win it.”

All five starters for the Broncos scored in double figures, with Butler saying Nicole Zammit, who had 12 points and nine assists, was the standout.

The Broncos sit 5-1 and atop the ladder.

Butler said they were more than pleased with where they were, considering they had a brand new line up this season.

“We don’t want to be hitting our straps now and we will learn from that loss,” she said.

“We play Warrnambool this week and then Sunbury the week after. They [Sunbury] should be at full strength and it will be a good measuring stick.”

The Broncos men’s side had a big win against the Hawthorn Magic on Saturday night, 103-83.

Jamal Shabazz top scored with 24 points, while five other players scored double figures.

The Broncos sit sixth with three wins.
