Hoppers Crossing kicked itself out of the contest in a seven-point loss to Altona in Western Region Football League division 1 at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday.
The Warriors had 18 shots on goal but only three on target as they frittered away chances in a low-scoring game.
It was a costly loss for the Warriors, who are a game and percentage outside the top five.
Nathan Williams was named best for Hoppers Crossing, while Daniel Strnak, Brandon Houlihan and Brenton Payne were the three goalkickers.
Hoppers Crossing will face St Albans, one of the in-form teams in the competition, at Hogans Road on Saturday.

The Saints leap-frogged Hoppers Crossing into the top five with a percentage-boosting win over Point Cook.
In Point Cook’s sixth straight loss, it was beaten by 97 points at Kings Park Reserve.
Werribee Districts booted 28 goals in a 169-point pummelling of bottom-of-the-ladder Albion at Parsons Reserve.
In division 2, Wyndhamvale cruised to a 78-point win over North Footscray at Hansen Reserve. Jesse Shell led the way for the Falcons with six goals, while Joel Russell added four. The Falcons are a game clear on top of the ladder.
Point Cook Centrals had the weekend off because of a forfeit by Manor Lakes, which will sit out the rest of the season.
In a statement on Manor Lakes’ official social media channels, club president Shane White said: “Along with the WRFL, the MLFC will review it’s off-field structure and financial position for the reintroduction of our senior men’s football in the future.”
In division 3, Tarneit had a 100-point win over North Sunshine, John Zangari booting seven goals.
Glen Orden was pipped by a point away at Sunshine Heights, but kept hold of top spot after second-placed Albanvale drew with Braybrook.
Wyndham Suns had a seven-point win over Laverton with John Tomelty best-on-ground.
