Glen Orden has tasted victory for the first time under new coach Nathan Moon in the Western Region Football League division 2.

Slow out of the blocks for a second straight week, the Hawks had to fight hard against North Footscray.

After getting to within one point at the min break, the Hawks were able to control much of the second half, to seal a 16.15 (111)-13.8 (86).

Speaking before the game, Moon said they were a team that would get better as the season goes on.

He said he was enjoying the process of being a head coach and everything that comes with it.

“It’s still early and we’re learning our game plan,” he said. “It’s a new game plan this season.

“We had some setbacks with injuries and COVID. But I wouldn’t change it for the world, the opportunity to coach season football.

“The list is good enough, but we’ll have a slow start and hopefully finish late.”

Moon said they were happy with where their list was sitting, but like all clubs are always looking for more players.

He said with season-ending injuries to a couple of recruits, they’ve had to give some guys who weren’t looking at getting opportunities at senior football this year.

“Jarrod Smith didn’t think he would be playing senior football this year,” he said.

“Julian Mosarevski

who is a 17-year-old came to us wanting to play senior football and is not out of place.

“Eddie Bryson is a junior who is getting opportunities he didn’t think he would get.”

Moon said one focus this season was trying to lift the expectations of the side and not be happy with just getting it done.

He said they want to strive to aim higher.

Moon said this season would be a close one, with every match important. After two rounds, six teams are already on the board.

“If you’re 10 per cent off, even five per cent off you can be beaten,” he said.

“We learnt that first hand on the weekend when we weren’t switched on early. We gave up a seven goal lead and lost by five goals.

“We’re just trying to play our best football and create havoc by the end of the season.
