Greenvale Kangaroos cruise to first win

Greenvale Kangaroos are on the board in Victorian Premier Cricket.

After an up-and-down start to the season, the Kangaroos were able to put it all together against Frankston Peninsula.

Sending Frankston Peninsula in, the Kangaroos got off to a slow start with their opposition cruising at 0-58.

But the wickets then started to fall as the Kangaroos worked themselves back into the game.

Frankston Peninsula lost 9-59 to slump to 9-117 before batting out the rest of its overs to finish 9-146.

James Rosewarne, who had taken three wickets in the first four games, was the standout taking 5-22.

The Kangaroos started strongly in their innings and never looked in trouble as they chased down the target with ease.

Rosewarne, who has moved to the top of the order the last two weeks in the absence of skipper Jarrod Leggett, was the anchor.

He finished 52 not out as the Kangaroos finished 4-150, making the runs with 11 balls to spare.

All the batsmen but one got starts.

Leggett said Rosewarne made the most of a second opportunity.

With import Alex Mellor arriving on Friday and Leggett named to return from injury, Rosewarne had originally been dropped. He got a late reprieve when Leggett pulled out.

“He’s struggled for form a bit the last year and a half and it will be a confidence boost for him,” Leggett said.

”James got a chance and he made the most of it. It’s better for us when he’s playing well.”

Leggett said they had been impressed the way Mellor had fitted straight in.

”Even if he’s not making runs, he’ll be a big asset to us with his leadership.

“He’s an up and about character and a real live wire in the field.”

The most pleasing thing for Leggett, it was the first time this season they’ve played well for the full 100 overs.

Leggett looks set to spend a bit more time on the sidelines, with his calf injury still causing concern.

A shoulder injury to Sunam Gautam means he’ll play just as a batsmen for the near future, while Trent Waring is still out with a knee injury.

In a rare feat, the Kangaroos top two sides both won on the same day.

The second XI which didn’t win a game last season has two wins this season.

The Kangaroos’ top side is 16th after five rounds ahead of a clash with Carlton this weekend in another one-day encounter.
