Amateur boxer Jesse Sandford has impressed Werribee trainer Dave Preston on all levels.
Sandford has an unblemished record with four wins and a split decision from five bouts to go with a junior state title he won last year.
The 16-year-old plans to defend his state middleweight crown later this year and then push for a national title.
“Both of his trainers and parents are proud of what he’s achieved so far,” Preston said.
“He plans to continue to climb the ladder. He wants to achieve his second state title at the end of the year and then go for an Australian title.”
It’s the work Sandford puts in out of the ring that has most impressed Preston.
“When he gets to training he’s really keen, he’s in it straight away,” the trainer says. “He goes straight to warm-up, does his skipping, stretching and loosening up.
“He listens well to the instructions given to him … he’s very committed to his chosen sport of boxing.”
Sandford has had only a small sample size of bouts, but Preston believes the youngster has what it takes to make it to a high level.
“Up to now, I’d say he’s got a fantastic future ahead of him,” Preston said.
“He wants to keep climbing the ladder to achieve his next state title and go from there.
“He’s training up for his next fight [on May 7], preparing hard and is motivated.
