Double header pain for Werribee Devils

It was an agonising weekend for Werribee Devils in the Big V basketball men’s state championship.

The Devils lost both games on a double header by a combined total of five points.

On Saturday night, Werribee went down to Hawthorn Magic 87-84 in a thriller at Eagle Stadium.

Deng Chan continued his recent high level of play with 27 points, including six three pointers.

Bryan Nagy contributed 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Konor Kulas took a back seat for a change with 12 points and five rebounds.

On Sunday, there would be more late pain for Werribee, pipped 81-79 by Waverley Falcons at the Waverley Basketball Centre.

With imports Nagy and Kulas kept quiet, captain Paul Elderkin, with 19 points, five rebounds and two steals, and Tyrone Remy, with 16 points, including four three pointers, stepped up big time.

Werribee is now 2-5. The Devils will need to find a way back into the winners’ circle when they host McKinnon Cougars at Eagle Stadium on Sunday.

It was a similar heartbreaking tale for Werribee in the women’s division 1.

The Devils went down in a nail-biter 69-66 to the Chelsea Gulls at Patterson River Stadium on Saturday night.

Import Alyssa Bennett had a major impact for the Devils with 12 points and 19 rebounds.

Werribee will be looking to improve on its 1-5 record when it hosts Geelong Supercats (3-3) on Sunday.
