Two clubs, Wyndhamvale and Newport have been stripped of premiership points following a spectator altercation at a Western Region Football League match last Saturday.
The altercation occurred during Newport and Wydnhamvale’s senior division 2 match at Langshaw Reserve in Altona North on July 2
Footage seen by Star Weekly shows spectators from Newport swarm an injured Wyndhamvale player when an argument broke out.
He is seen being punched before being chased by a number of fans.
The footage then shows a man being tackled to the ground before being mobbed by dozens of fans.
The league released a statement on Thursday, with penalties issued to both clubs for bringing the league in disrepute.
The senior and reserves sides from both clubs have been docked four premiership points each.
In the senior division, Wyndhamvale remains in fourth spot, but is now only percentage ahead of Glen Orden. Newport, which was fifth, now sits in sixth after losing the four points. They are four points back from Wyndhamvale and Glen Orden.
The investigation pertaining to individuals involved remains ongoing.
“These sanctions should serve as notice to all clubs and supporters that the WRFL board will act promptly and decisively in its efforts to eliminate condemnable acts the likes of which occurred on Saturday, whether culprits involved are directly/formally affiliated with their respective club or otherwise,” the statement said.
“The league acknowledges and appreciates the full and ongoing cooperation of both clubs involved.”
