BMX ace speeds to top

At age seven, Truganina’s Cameron Gatt is one of the fastest junior BMX riders in the world after placing third at the recent BMX world championships in Belgium.

Cameron, who is in grade 1 at St Clare’s Catholic Primary School, qualified for a place in the world titles after winning the nationals in Brisbane earlier this year.

Mum Michelle said Cameron had been competing for two years after being inspired by seeing BMX riders at a Weerama parade.

“He’s a champion – he’s super-fast,” Ms Gatt said.

She said Cameron battled some pre-race nerves during his practice sessions but pulled it all together for the competition.

Cameron competes with Geelong Thunder BMX club and trains up to five times a week under the guidance of father and son team Fraser and Brandon Te Hiko.

Brandon, who is completing year 12 at Wyndham Central College, won his fifth national title at the 2015 BMX national championships in Brisbane earlier this year and was at one stage ranked No.1 in the world in the junior elite division.

Cameron dreams of becoming No.1-ranked rider in the world for his age group at next year’s world championships, which will be held in Colombia.
