Werribee is travelling along nicely as finals quickly approach in the Bowls Victoria weekend pennant division 2, section 1 competition.

The Bees sit in second spot with just two rounds remaining, on the back of six successive wins.

Bees’ Steve Weston said they were happy with how things were panning out after a slow start to the season.

“We’re travelling along famously and sitting second on the ladder,” he said.

“Things are looking very positive at the moment and there’s really strong cohesion between all the players.

“Everyone is firing at the right time of the season.”

Weston said pre-season the aim had been to make finals and they had already exceeded expectations.

A win this week and other results going their way, the Bees could seal up a top two spot heading into the final round.

Weston said they were focused on that and were hoping to go deep into finals.

“Deer Park is on top of the ladder and is a really strong side,” he said. ”We’ve played them the last couple of years and it’s always a tight tussle.

“They will have a home final that will make it a bit more difficult, but under new conditions we should get a second chance.

“It would be pretty tight but on our day, anyone can beat anyone.”

On Saturday, the Bees easily accounted for third placed Keilor.

The Bees won all four rinks on the way to a 91 (18)-63 (0).

Weston said they had solid wins in three of the rinks, while Brendan Barker’s rink snuck home by one shot.

Weston said they had two other sides still in the finals mix at this point, but it is too close call at this stage.

In other division 2, section 1 matches, Hoppers lost to Altona 2.

Altona 2, a finals hopeful, won 87 (16)-63 (2).

Mario Aquilina was the winning skip for Hoppers. Hoppers sit bottom of the ladder with one win.

In division 3, section 1, Palm Lake lost to Williamstown, 77 (16)-69 (2).

Fifth-placed Palm Lake now sits 27 points behind fourth-placed Williamstown.

In the same division, Werribee 2 lost to the City of Melbourne, 78 (14)-53 (4).

In division 4, section 1, Point Cook lost to Melton 3, 88 (14)-81 (4) and Werribee 3 lost to Rosamond, 91 (18)-57 (0).

Point Cook has now slipped to second and Werribee is in fourth.
