Battle of the Bridge looms

Western United will return to GMHBA Stadium in Geelong to kick off the 2021/22 A-League season on Saturday, November 20.

Western United will play against Melbourne Victory in a game dubbed the ‘Battle of the Bridge’, starting at 7.45pm.

Fans from the Green and Black army are now able to book tickets to watch John Aloisi’s first competitive match in charge of the team.

Western United’s latest signings, including internationals Leo Lacroix, Aleksandar Prijovic and Rene Krhin and Australian stars Neil Kilkenny, Ben Garuccio, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Dylan Wenzel Halls, are set to star in the game.

Following on from its successful implementation last season, Western United has announced children will be admitted free-of-charge to all matches in the 2021/22 A-League men’s season.

As it stands, the round one clash will take place with 25 per cent capacity fulfilled in the stadium.

Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is required to enter the arena, and each ticketholder must remain within their designated zone for the entirety of the match.

Youngsters under 12 will be eligible for a free ticket in the general admission category at every home game this season, while family packages in category A and category B will amount only to the cost of two adult tickets.

Western United chief executive Chris Pehlivanis said the support from the club’s young fans was crucial in the present, and would continue to be in the future.

“We are a family club,” he said.

“We want kids to feel welcome at our games and we want them to have fun and feel a part of our family, our community.

“I am so proud of the club for running this initiative.

“Our young fans are the future of our club and will be the future of football in the country as a whole.

“Providing a positive experience for families and kids is of great importance to us, and I am really looking forward to seeing the kids of the west wearing the green and black colours on matchday this season.”

Western United last week announced its full fixture for the 2021/22 men’s season.

Their second game will be held on Friday, November 26 against Perth Glory at AAMI Park.

Aloisi will take his side interstate for the first time in round seven with a New Year’s Day clash against Western Sydney Wanderers at CommBank Stadium.

The final game of the season, against the Central Coast Mariners, has been scheduled for Saturday, April 30 next year at Central Coast Stadium.

Some dates, venues and kick-off times remain tentatively scheduled or are still to be confirmed, pending broadcast schedules and venue availability.
