Hoppers Crossing wasn’t able to overcome a 2-0 deficit at half time to get victory in the opening round of FV state league 2 north-west. The Reds trailed Hume United at the half, before getting one goal back. The Reds weren’t able to get a second one to share the points, losing 2-1. In state league 4 west, Truganina Hornets lost to Keilor Wolves 3-0, while in state league 5 west, Tarneit United lost 3-0 to Deakin University and West Point beat ETA Buffalo, 4-0.

VFL

Werribee has filled its two remaining list spots on its list for the Victorian Football League season. Ruckman Akol Deng is a recent convert to Australian rules football from a professional basketball background and spent last season with the club as a train-on player. Charlie Byrne, was previously involved with Essendon’s VFL program and played two games for the Bombers in 2021 before relocating to Geelong to play with Newtown and Chilwell.

A-League

Western United’s winning run came to an end against the Brisbane Roar in the A-League Men’s competition on Saturday. United struggled to find any rhythm, with the Roar finding plenty of opportunities. After having two goals disallowed, the Roar finally got on the board in the 81st minute. It would be enough for a 1-0 win. United remains in seventh spot with five matches remaining.

A-League

Steven Lustica has ensured that he will be a part of each of the Western United’s first five seasons in the A-League Men, signing a one-year contract extension at the club. The midfielder joined United in February 2020 and he enjoyed arguably the best season of his career in 2021-22, playing 26 times and scoring five goals on the way to helping United lift its first ever A-League Championship.
