Basketball

Former Werribee basketball star Maddy Rocci has been named in an extended Australian Opals squad in preparation for the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2024 Olympics. The squad contains 26 players and all the Australian-based athletes will compete in a camp that will be held at the AIS National Training Centre from March 31 to April 5. Rocci is currently starting for the South Side Flyers in the Women’s National Basketball League.

Athletics

Western Athletics Jack Rayner is among the first athletes selected for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst. Australia announced the first 14 athletes to represent the team, with Rayner, the Australian 10,000 kilometre record holder among those selected. He’ll compete in the open men’s 10,000 kilometre event. The championships are on between February 17 and 19.

FFV

Tarneit United will field a team in the FV state league men’s competition for the first time this year. The club announced on social media it had been successful in its applications to join the state league competitions The men’s side will compete in the state league 5 west competition. The club hosted trials for the team last week.

VTCA

Sydenham-Hillside, the Druids and Jacana were among the teams to seal spots in the next round of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association T20 competition. With the pool round games continuing, due to washouts before Christmas, there was plenty of action last Tuesday night. Sydenham Hillside got one over local rival Caroline Springs and sealed its finals spot in the Smith group. The Druids claimed top spot in the Taylor group with victory against Footscray United, while Jacana beat Glenroy to finish on the top of its pool. Pool matches continue this week.
