Agius steps up at West Point

Jacob Agius will step up at West Point having been named the club’s men’s coach for next year’s FV state league 6 north-west season.

Agius was the club’s reserves coach this year and will continue his coaching journey with the senior side next year.

Agius has been a member of West Point since 2019 as a player in both seniors and reserves.

He assisted coaching the reserves in 2022 and was part of the club’s 2024 technical directors that built the club’s junior program.

When he retired last year he stepped into coaching.

Agius said he was excited to have the opportunity at the club he has called home.

“It’s a big step and I can’t wait to get started,” he said..

“Coaching is something I have wanted to do since I started playing.

“When I was young I would watch the game and analyse the tactical game, it’s like chess.”

Agius said jumping into the senior role happened earlier than he would have expected, thinking that he might spend more time as a reserves coach.

But when the opportunity arose, Agius jumped at the chance.

He said having been involved at the club was a positive as he knows how the club and the program runs.

It was a tough season for West Point which finished bottom of state league 4 west with two wins for the season.

Under a new competition structure, West Point will play in the new state league 6 north-west competition.

Agius said this year was a bit of a holding year as the club worked out the direction it wanted to go as the restructure came.

“Everyone is aligned on where we want to go,” he said. “We want to focus on development going forward.

“We’ve got juniors and we want that pathway into the seniors and reserves. We want to develop our own players.

“The senior squad will have a very young average age. They are ready to step up.”

Agius had a young reserves side in 2025 and many of those players will step up into the senior side.

He said having coached many of the players before made the trial process easier.

“My primary objective for the upcoming season is to build a highly competitive reserves and seniors program capable of challenging for promotion,” Agius said.

“We will achieve this by thoughtfully integrating talented players graduating from our junior pathway who are now ready to make the step up into senior football, while continuing to strengthen the overall depth and quality of the squad.”

The club is still seeking sponsors for next season.
