WRFL: Werribee Districts beaten in preliminary final

Werribee Districts’ finals run came to an abrupt end against finals specialists Spotswood in the Western Region Football League division 1 preliminary final on Saturday.

The Tigers were impressive in their first season back in the western region after years in the Victorian Amateur Football Association, but a grand final berth was just beyond them.

Spotswood turned it on at Chirnside Park after half time, kicking nine goals to three to win 16.12 (108) to 8.11 (59).

To demonstrate the size of the task confronting the Tigers this season, they finished third behind a Spotswood team gearing up for its eighth consecutive top-flight grand final.

Their opponents, Deer Park, will have an all-star cast led by ex-AFL stars Bret Thornton, Brent Guerra, Ryan Hargrave and Marc Bullen to go with a who’s who of local footballers.

The best for the Tigers were Jameel Sargent, captain Matt Dean and Bol Kolang, while Matthew Turner booted three goals.

Spotswood and Deer Park will square off in Saturday’s grand final at Chirnside Park at 2.25pm.
