Werribee Centrals’ most ardent desire going in to their first
Geelong and District Football League reserves grand final since 2010 was
to get some respect back after a disastrous second semi-final hammering
at the hands of North Geelong.
The Centurions provided sterner opposition, but still fell 45
points short in the season decider, outclassed by a Norths side with
depth in every position.
The final scoreline was Werribee Centrals 8.4 (52) to Norths 13.19 (97).
The first quarter was an arm wrestle with neither side able to convert.
The second saw Norths flex their muscles, keep the Centurions to
just two behinds for the term and pepper the goals for a 22-point
half-time lead.
Norths kicked the first of the third, but Centrals kept fighting
and slowly the game turned, bringing the gap back to five points. Two
goals to Norths would halt the Centurions’ charge and see them trail by
10 points at the last change.
Centurions coach Andrew McDonald implored his team to dig deep.
The players responded, but two critical errors allowed Norths to
turn the ball over and get the run-on they needed to claim the
premiership.
