IT was a defining moment in the seasons of Werribee Centrals and Geelong West in the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup.
They sit third and fourth, respectively, and the winner would break clear of the pack on Queen’s Birthday weekend.
The Centurions were switched on from the outset and went on to win by 58 points at Galvin Park on Saturday.
They got a dream start, kicking the first three goals of the match, with ruckman Nathan Lovell and onballer Michael Cassidy producing a scorching start.
Cassidy, with his penetrating kicking, and youngster Matty Walsen, finding space on the wings, proved the difference between the two sides.
It was just three goals the difference heading into the fourth quarter, but two quick goals to the Centurions from Scott Rathbone and Brad McNicol took the steam out of the game. The Centurions kicked eight goals to one to come out convincing winners and gain a tighter hold on third spot.
Scoreboard: Werribee Centrals 20.7 (127) defeated Geelong West 10.9 (69).
