WERRIBEE Centrals have sent a powerful message to the rest of the Geelong and District Netball League A grade that they’ll be a premiership threat after a 38-35 win over previous ladder leader East Geelong on Saturday.
The Centurions moved to outright top of the ladder after a thrilling victory on the back of 23 goals to Mickayla Ward and a best-on-court performance from mid-counter Nicole Stewart.
The defence combination of Amanda Wilson and Noni McClure pressured the East’s goalers in the early exchanges and gave the Centurions the impetus for an 11-6 quarter-time lead.
East stepped it up a notch in the second quarter and held a one-goal lead at half-time after applying better physical pressure
With a few positional changes at half-time, the Centurions fired up again for the challenge.
Emma Richards stepped into the centre position and worked in a fine combination with Stewart and Hailey Sildatke.
Sharpshooter Ward capitalised on all of her goaling opportunities in the fourth, remaining composed against the physical East defence to play a match-winning role late in the game.
