Youth shape council policy

A group of young people is helping Wyndham council to take the lead on issues which are important to them and their peers.

The council has formed a new youth committee of residents aged between 16 to 25 years old.

The Wyndham Youth Council Committee was established in collaboration with councillor Josh Gilligan, the council’s learning city portfolio holder.

The first meeting of the youth committee was held on May 3, and has been tasked to help shape the council’s Wyndham Youth Plan, which is being developed for 2018 onwards.

“The young people that attended this meeting identified a range of key issues and priorities, including transport, drug and alcohol abuse, education and employment, social isolation and the marginalisation of refugee and migrant communities,” Cr Gilligan said.

He said the youth committee aimed to provide a strong voice to young people and give them a chance to share their opinions with the government and business sectors.

“Council will also reap rewards, with the committee giving us a chance to seek the advice and recommendations of young people on a range of strategic issues,” he said.
