Just over 100 residents had their say on Wyndham council’s new waste and litter strategy, which includes reducing the size of residential waste bins.
Sustainable development director Dean Rochfort said that between January and March, the council had run a six-week consultation on the changes, which include reducing residential waste wheelie bins from 140 litres in capacity to 120 litres in coming years, redeveloping the transfer station at the Werribee tip by 2020, and rolling out subsidised green waste bins to all properties.
Mr Rochfort said 107 residents had responded to a council questionnaire about the waste and litter strategy.
“The consultation paper was designed in a way that residents didn’t need to respond to all waste issues raised, but we find that people will generally comment if they are strongly opposed or strongly in favour,” Mr Rochfort said.
“For those who responded to standardising our kerbside bins, the majority were in favour and there was no specific mention of the size of the bins.
“This could be due to the fact that residents that responded who may have lived in other suburbs would have already used the smaller bins as Wyndham is one of only a few cities in the state still using the larger rubbish bins.”
