Parkrun comes to Wyndham Vale

On your marks, get set …

Wyndham Vale will get its own running group this Saturday when Parkrun launches at Presidents Park.

Parkrun is an international running movement that started in the UK a decade ago and has spread to 12 countries, including Australia.

Each group operates a free weekly five-kilometre run to encourage locals to be more active and socialise with others in the community.

The timed event is run much like a fun run, with each runner having their times uploaded to a database and emailed to participants so they can track their weekly progress.

Wyndham Vale organiser Maria Lodola- Price started running with the Point Cook group in November 2014 and has been working to establish the Wyndham Vale group since last May.

“A lot of people are not runners when they first start – I couldn’t run the whole distance at the start – but you get better and I’ve signed up for my first 10-kilometre fun run,” she said.

“You don’t have to run, you can walk, you can bring your dog, you can bring your baby in a pram. It caters for all levels of fitness.”

Ms Lodola-Price said the Point Cook and Altona groups each attracted about 100 runners a week during summer, and she expected the Wyndham Vale group to be about the same size.
