Work on a new $13.2 million community centre in Wyndham Vale is on track for completion by mid-2019.
Construction on the Wyndham Aboriginal Community Centre and Integrated Family Centre is at lock-up stage, with internal plastering and construction of the carpark next on the to-do list.
Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said that once complete, the community centre would include three kindergarten rooms and a playground, five consulting rooms for maternal and child health and other services, and two community activity rooms for larger functions.
She said the centre would have activity rooms, an arts and craft room, a meeting room, men’s and women’s cultural spaces and a dedicated outdoor ceremonial space for the indigenous community.
“It will provide a place for people who live in this neighbourhood to meet each other and connect,” she said.
“It will also be unique, as it will provide a dedicated space for Aboriginal people to strengthen connections to culture, community and country.”
Located on Wollahra Rise, the centre will be located next to a planned prep-to-12 school.
The concept arose from a Wyndham Aboriginal Forum held in 2013 that identified the need for an indigenous community centre in Wyndham.
