On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, we will remember them.
Wyndham locals will gather at the Station Place cenotaph in Werribee from 10.40am this Sunday for a traditional Remembrance Day service, which will include wreath-laying, the Last Post and reading of the Ode.
November 11 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended World War I.
Werribee RSL president Daryl Ryan said it was more important than ever to commemorate those who lost their lives during World War I.
“One of the questions I often get asked is why are the names on the cenotaph,” Mr Ryan said.
“That is those gentlemen’s headstone here in Australia – they haven’t got a grave here in Australia. Some of those people haven’t got a grave, they were completely obliterated.
“Their headstone is not at the cemetery, it’s at the cenotaph.
“Sixty from Werribee died … we’ve got to remember that the life that we live in this country has been paid for in blood.
“Some of them had families, others never got to have a family. Kids never got to know their parents, so we’ve got to keep that alive. We’ve got to remember not only them but all service personnel.”
