Wyndham to receive $2 million to tackle ice epidemic

Wyndham health services will receive a $2 million state government cash injection to tackle the harm caused by the state’s ice epidemic.

Werribee Mercy Hospital will receive $180,000 to expand its needle and syringe program and hire additional staff.

Werribee MP Tim Pallas says Wyndham will also benefit from $1.48 million in funding to alcohol and drug centre Turning Point for a statewide family drug education program, and from $2 million in funding over four years to Odyssey House Victoria and Anglicare Victoria for rehabilitation programs.

Mr Pallas said Wyndham would receive a total of $2 million in extra support services from the programs.

He announced the funding last Friday as part of a $24.6 million package to expand treatment services, support families and strengthen communities across Victoria.

“We know the damage ice can inflict on communities, not just in my electorate of Werribee, but across Victoria.

“Different people need different kinds of drug treatment.”

Figures from Turning Point reveal that the number of call-outs across Wyndham for crystal methamphetamine, soared in recent years.

Paramedics were called to 28 ice cases in the municipality in 2012-13, up 47 per cent from 19 cases in 2011-12.
