Two Wyndham sporting ovals are set for multi-million revamps thanks to a $3 million state government cash injection.
The new-look Mossfiel Reserve at Hoppers Crossing will include rugby ovals, a cricket pitch, netball courts, upgraded and unisex change rooms for players and umpires, better lighting, walking and cycling paths, and a state-of-the-art pavilion.
The $7.2 million overhaul includes $1.8 million in state funding, and is expected to be completed by June next year.
In Truganina, Mainview Boulevard Reserve will also receive a new pavilion, as well as a meeting space, kitchen, change rooms, showers and toilets, umpires’ rooms, public toilets, a first-aid room, storage space and a cleaner’s room as part of a $2.98 million makeover, including $1.2 million from the state.
Locals will have to wait until March 2019 for this project to be complete.
The state funding is part of the government’s $50 million growing suburbs fund, which contributes to projects in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
Wyndham council is footing the rest of the bill for both projects.
Council’s sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard said the projects will help meet the demands of a booming population.
“We all know that Wyndham’s population has been growing at an astounding rate for quite some time now,” Cr Maynard said.
“This population growth is bringing increased demand for access to sports, in particular cricket.
“Over the last three cricket seasons alone, the number of cricket teams in Wyndham has more than doubled, from 80 to 169.
“This new pavilion being built at Mainview Boulevard will help meet that growing demand by accommodating 20 cricket teams.”
Cr Maynard said the Mossfiel Reserve upgrade was an example of the council redesigning existing open spaces “to get the most out of them”.
“The redevelopment of Mossfiel Reserve will focus on supporting the growth of women’s sport and encourage further participation.”
