Wyndham loses CBD ferry option

It’s official … the ferry service from Wyndham Harbour to Docklands is dead in the water.

Port Phillip Ferries last week announced it has decided on a permanent seven-day ferry service between Portarlington and Docklands, which kicked off last Tuesday.

However, no such announcement was made for the Wyndham Harbour to Docklands service, and Port Phillip Ferries confirmed on its Facebook page that it would only be running the Portarlington service “at this stage”.

This is despite ferry operations manager Jamie Ruscoe telling Star Weekly last month that weekend sailings between Wyndham Harbour and Docklands were likely to continue after the end of Port Phillip Ferries’ five-month trial of the western routes.

“We have every intention of continuing the service, and further announcements will be made during the maintenance period,” Mr Ruscoe said at the time.

Port Phillip Ferries did not respond to Star Weekly’s request for comment last week.

The 400-seat Wyndham Explorer catamaran started its Wyndham Harbour to Docklands trial on May 16, with Port Phillip Ferries making several timetable and price changes during the trial in response to public feedback.

Despite this, commuter numbers dropped off during weekdays, prompting Port Phillip Ferries to pare back the seven-day service, and instead run two return services on Fridays and a return service on Saturdays and Sundays.

The business also started the daily Portarlington to Docklands trial service during this time, which drew commuters in much greater numbers than the Wyndham service.
