Wyndham Harbour opens to public

The first stage of the $440 million Wyndham Harbour Marina was opened to the public last weekend during a two-day festival.

Thousands flocked to the marina to enjoy a weekend full of activities, including power boat handling lessons, stand up paddle boarding, jet-ski flyboard demonstrations, a beach race and the Wyndham Harbour Fishing Classic.

The harbour development features the only marina between Williamstown and Geelong, and eventually it will have 1000 berths and storage for up to 390 boats.

Once complete, it will be the largest marina in Victoria, opening up parts of Port Phillip Bay never before accessible to swimmers and boating enthusiasts. It will also be the new home of the Werribee South Coast Guard.

Project director Sonya Miller said she was thrilled the harbour had reached this milestone. “It was fantastic, we were blessed with wonderful weather and it was amazing to see all those boats sparkling on the water,” Ms Miller said.

“It was very satisfying, after all these years … [I was] having flashbacks to what it was all those years ago, when it was really just a dirt track with lots of weeds along the foreshore.”

Ms Miller said construction of the Lighthouse apartments was due to start this year and a new land release with 130 blocks has just been released. Wyndham Harbour Marina was first proposed by the state government in 1983. Developers secured the land in 2003.
