Wyndham drivers charged with 152 offences in a police blitz

Wyndham drivers were charged with 152 offences in a police blitz held over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

It was the second-highest number in Melbourne, after the 155 offences detected in Brimbank over the four days of Operation Regal.

In Wyndham, 28 drivers were caught speeding and another 28 were found to be driving unregistered vehicles.

Westgate highway patrol’s Acting Senior Sergeant Aaron Prentice-Evans said both figures were concerning.

“We had a high presence on major arterials and thoroughfares, which is where we detected most [speeding] offences,” he said.

“Our high visibility was so drivers would see a large number of police and not speed – let them know we’re around.”

Acting Senior Sergeant Prentice-Evans said most unregistered vehicles were detected by automatic number plate recognition technology.

“This is not merely an administrative oversight,” he said. “A lot of unregistered vehicles are driven by people who are committing, or have committed, other offences.”

Six drivers were picked up driving under the influence of alcohol and three tested positive to drug use.

Fifteen disqualified drivers were detected driving, eight drivers were unlicensed, and there were seven seatbelt offences and 12 mobile phone offences.
