Crime in Wyndham sored by 11 per cent in 2022, new data reveals.
Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) data for the year to December 31, 2022, shows there were 17,666 offences recorded in Wyndham, up 11 per cent from 2021 when 15,915 offences were recorded.
The surge in crime was driven by a 22.2 per cent increase in criminal damage offences, with 1529 offences recorded in 2022, up from 1251 offences in 2021.
Thefts from a motor vehicle rose 16.7 per cent from 1837 offences in 2021, to 2143 offences in 2022, while family violence common assault rose 16.1 per cent from 727 offence to 844 offences during the same period.
The municipality also recorded a rise in the number of offences classified as ‘other thefts’ (1774 offences in 2022, up from 1622 offences in 2021) and breaches of family violence orders which rose 6.4 per cent from 1582 offences in 2021 to 1684 offences 12 months later.
Family violence incidents rose by 5.2 per, from 4088 offences in 2021, to 4300 offences in 2022.
Werribee recorded the greatest number of offences (4977), followed by Hoppers Crossing (2982), Point Cook (2587), Tarneit (2388) and Truganina (1375).
Victoria Police deputy commissioner of regional operations Rick Nugent Victoria Police said police would continue to focus on family violence and proactive prevention and enforcement to ensure the community feels safe in their homes, in public and on the roads.
“There are a few key areas of concern for police, including offenders sneaking into homes to steal car keys and overall youth offending,” he said.
“The community can rest assured we are investing significant energy and resources towards preventing and responding to this offending, with dedicated operations in place that have led to thousands of arrests
over the past year.
“While we’re doing everything, we can to keep Victoria safe, we also encourage the community to ensure their homes and vehicles are locked to help prevent opportunistic offending.”
