There are renewed calls for motorists, parents and students to be road safe around schools following an incident outside Manor Lakes College.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson confirmed an incident involving a pedestrian occurred at Manor Lakes Boulevard just after 3.15pm on October 11.
Paramedics treated a child at the scene, who was later taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries.
Wyndham council is urging drivers to be aware of their surroundings and to slow down and park safely when driving near schools.
According to council, there are six supervised crossings servicing Manor Lakes College, located on Eureka Drive, Howqua Way, Minindee Road, Scholar Drive and two on Manor Lakes Boulevard.
“Safety is everyone’s responsibility, so all road users including cyclists are asked to be diligent and alert around schools, particularly during peak times,” Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said.
“We know that drop-off and pick-up times can be particularly stressful for all involved and that is why there are reduced speed zones around schools in place between 8am to 9:30am and in the afternoon between 2.30 and 4pm.
“We continue to ask all road users and residents to remain vigilant around schools to ensure the safety of students.”
A parent who’s child attended the school said visibility around the college could be difficult, with traffic congestion, buses blocking view, and kids crowding along the kerb.
The parent called for people to be reminded about road safety.
Council said residents should obey 40km/h speed zones, follow road rules and watch out for school crossing supervisors.
“Drivers are also reminded that double parking, stopping in a no-standing zone and parking on nature strips is both illegal and dangerous,” Mr Thorpe said.
Manor Lakes College was contacted for comment.
