Nine out of 10 Wyndham bus stops don’t have a shelter, and one Wyndham resident is keen to see that fixed.
Figures from Public Transport Victoria reveal that, at the end of June, there were shelters at only 116 of almost 1100 bus stops across the city.
Thirteen new shelters were installed last year, with shelters also being added at Wyndham Vale and Tarneit stations this year as part of Regional Rail Link works.
Truganina resident Joh Bauch said that while he was pleased to see new bus shelters, Wyndham desperately needed more.
Mr Bauch, who has been fighting for more bus shelters in Wyndham for three years, said the city was one of the only areas in Melbourne where most bus stops did not have shelters.
“You’re waiting for a bus to go shopping or to the train station in the middle of winter and it’s cold and raining and there’s no shelter … just a concrete slab and a pole that says ‘bus stop’,” he said.
“You see shelters everywhere else, but you hardly see any over here. Now more people are getting the bus, especially to get to the new train stations; we need them.”
Star Weekly asked Public Transport Victoria what percentage of bus stops in Victoria had shelters, but spokeswoman Helen Witton said it was not possible to provide that information because a number of councils managed their own shelters.
Ms Witton said an extra 14 bus shelters would be installed across Wyndham in the next year, with locations determined by consultation and the suitability of bus stop sites for shelter construction.
