Wyndham 1000 sees help go full circle

Les Porter’s life changed dramatically when he was hit by a car 27 years ago.

“After the accident I was in fairly dire straits,” the Hoppers Crossing resident said.

“My right leg was broken in seven places and I sustained a head injury that means the left side of my body virtually doesn’t get messages from my brain.

“After years of having a good job, I found myself with no wages … learning to walk again. It was mentally and physically demanding.”

The Salvation Army stepped in to help the recovery process. To say thanks, Mr Porter created the Wyndham 1000, a 1000-kilometre tricycle ride across Wyndham.

This month, he will embark on his sixth Wyndham 1000, which has raised more $50,000 for the Salvation Army since its inception.

Mr Porter said about 500 students from Wyndham primary and secondary schools would join him on sections of the ride.

“All funds raised will go to the local Salvation Army to help the homeless, the disadvantaged and those at risk in our community,” he said.

“It gives me great joy to help the community. It is my way of showing appreciation and helping out after receiving help myself.”
