Young Wyndham residents jammed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) during a music event held on Friday, January 28.
The MSO hosted a 45-minute workshop for children under the age of five years old, along with their parents, at the Wyndham Cultural Centre in Werribee.
The event involved children in learning about Tchaikovsky’s famous score from The Nutcracker.
Presenter Karen Kyriakou, an educator, author, composer and arranger, lead the hands-on session along with musicians from the MSO.
MSO principal conductor in residence, Benjamin Northey, said the workshops were “a wonderful way” to start the new year.
Following the success of its Summer Symphony in 2021, the MSO was scheduled to hold a series of summer concerts in Melbourne’s outer suburbs during January 2022, including performances and children’s workshops in the municipalities of Wyndham and Casey, in the city’s south-eastern suburbs.
The MSO partnered with councils and performing arts organisations to offer outer urban audiences a symphonic experience that combined traditional and contemporary voices, although the Summer Symphony large event scheduled for Werribee on Friday, January 28 had to be cancelled due to rain on Friday, January 28.
However, MSO artistic advisor Matthey Hoy said the program extended beyond a one-off performance.
“Summer Symphony is as much about engaging with local communities as it is about delivering a relaxed family-friendly concert,’ he said.
