A vegetable education session run by a Werribee South farm is among the many online workshops on offer during this year’s Wyndham Learning Festival.
Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, this year’s festival is a virtual one.
The festival, which will run until Sunday, contains plenty of free content and events for residents under the theme of “Re-emerge, Connect and Thrive”.
The Learning Festival is run in partnership between the Wyndham Community and Education Centre and Wyndham council.
Wyndham’s learning city portfolio holder, Cr Jasmine Hill, said lockdown was a good time to learn a new skill.
“This the ideal opportunity with workshops and fun activities available for both adults and children available free online,” she said.
Velisha Farms’ VEG Education session will take place on Facebook Live at 10am on Saturday via: fb.me/e/1EYbijE7j.
It will show how first-hand how vegetables get from the farm to plates.
Velisha managing director Catherine Velisha said that during lockdown, the farm has also been running an online program for schools covering the nutritional value of vegetables, production processes, a live walkthrough of the farm, interviews with staff, careers in agriculture, cartoons, a broccoli song and interactive quiz.
“What we are also trying to do with the schools is make Werribee South a source of pride in the community,” Ms Velisha said.
She said that schools from across the state have participated in the online program, which is a virtual version of the educational visits which students can participate in at the farm outside of lockdown.
“Lots of schools who were booked in to come and visit have swapped to virtual sessions so they don’t miss out,” Ms Velisha said.
