Works wrap up at Old Geelong Road

Car parking has been upgraded at Hoppers Crossing Station.

Major works to remove the level crossing and add a new road bridge have wrapped in Hoppers Crossing, signifying the end of the Old Geelong Road level crossing removal project.

The new Hoppers Crossing Station Precinct includes upgraded car parking and bike facilities, sheltered bus stops, public artwork, and new plazas.

Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said safety has been significantly improved for the 18,000 vehicles that use Old Geelong Road daily.

“It’s a thrill to celebrate the end of level crossing removal works at Hoppers Crossing, we’ve received lots of positive feedback from the community about the improved safety sine the level crossing was removed, as well as the upgraded station and new plazas,” she said.

“The new precinct has given the area a new freshness and vitality and the new facilities at Hoppers Crossing Station, such as seating and sheltered bus stops, are already being put to good use.”

A new pedestrian and cyclist overpass at Hoppers Crossing Station opened in February 2022, and a historical marker near the site of the former level crossing has also been added to the precinct, honouring the Hopper family’s contribution to Victorian railways and their 140-year legacy in the area.

The nearby section of the 23-kilometre-long Federation Trail has been asphalted and is open for use by residents, and upgrades on Heaths Road, Morris Road and Old Geelong Road are also complete.

About 15,000 trees, plants and shrubs were also planted across the precinct, including a resilient ‘Woody Meadow’ garden in the southern plaza and flowering and native shrubs like hibiscus, grevilleas and bottlebrushes.

The Old Geelong Road level crossing was replaced with a new road bridge that directly connects Old Geelong Road to Princes Highway.
