Construction has started on an early childhood services centre in Tarneit capable of accommodating 100 children.

The Werribee Islamic Centre (WIC) recently hosted a sod-turning ceremony at the site of the future facility, to be located near the Melbourne Grand Mosque on Wootten Road.

The $1.1 million centre, to which the state government has provided $650,000 in funding, is expected to open next year.

It will include spaces for three and four-year-old kindergarten programs, long day care, playgroups and maternal child health.
