The first sod has been turned and a new school for Point Cook is on its way.
Point Cook South P-9 College at Boardwalk Boulevard will open its gates to students on the first day of term one in 2017.
Education Minister James Merlino, who visited the site last week, said the school would specialise in environmental programs.
“Melbourne’s west is growing and we need to keep investing in schools,” he said. “Investment is the key to ensuring young people of the west get the education they deserve.”
Altona MP Jill Hennessy said the new school was important for the region.
“We have unimaginable growth in the region and this school will help beat the demand pressures we are experiencing in schools,” she said.
Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said she was pleased work had started.
“Wyndham’s extremely rapid growth, which includes 11 babies being born a day, means more schools are required to provide local education facilities for current and future generations,” she said.
“Wyndham council looks forward to working closely with the state government to deliver more much-needed infrastructure for our residents.”
The school is one of 15 to be built across the state in partnership with consortium Learning Communities Victoria, creating 600 jobs.
