Woman injured in alleged Tarneit carjacking

A 21-year-old woman was dragged along the ground as her car was stolen in an alleged carjacking in Tarneit on Friday night.

Detective Senior Constable Steve Robinson, of Wyndham crime investigation unit, said the victim had pulled over on Wickford Road about 10.30pm and stepped out of her vehicle but left the motor running.

Detective Senior Constable Robinson said police were unsure why the woman had gotten out of the car.

He said an unidentified man, described as being of Caucasian appearance, had then jumped into the driver’s seat of the black Audi sedan.

“When he’s jumped in, she (the car owner) has realised and tried the door,” he said.

“As she was trying to open the door, her bangle became caught in the door handle and she’s been dragged along.”

Detective Senior Constable Robinson said  the woman could have been dragged for up to 10 metres.

“When she’s worked her bangle free, she’s fallen onto the road,” he said.

The womanwas taken to hospital with facial and body injuries.

Detective Senior Constable Robinson said the carjacking had left the woman “very scared”.

“She was just going about her own business when this happened – it’s very unexpected and very scary,” he said.

Some of the woman’s personal property, including a mobile phone, was inside the vehicle when it was  stolen. Police found the vehicle in a  residential street in Yarraville on Saturday.
