A new bicycle parking at Werribee Mercy Hospital will give staff the option to ditch the car and reap the benefits of riding to work.

The parking can store twenty five bicycles and features around the clock CCTV monitoring.

Werribee Mercy Hospital general manager, Maree Pane said staff are excited about the new bike parking facilities.

“It has been a difficult time for everyone employed in healthcare, and when you are working long hours it can be hard to find the time to do something good for yourself, like exercise,” Ms Pane said.

“Hopefully, having secure bike parking facilities at the hospital will encourage more of our staff to cycle to and from work.

“In addition to the health and well-being benefits for our staff, it is better for the environment. Every small thing we can to reduce our carbon footprint is a step in the right direction.”

Intensive Care Unit equipment nurse, Nick Tippett said cycling to work is a “great way to start the day”.

“You arrive at work awake and alert, and it is a lot cheaper than driving or taking public transport,” he said.

“It is especially important for hospital staff to get out and active in nature.

“We spend most of our day at work stuck in N95 masks and air conditioning. It is nice to breathe fresh air.”
