The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has given Wyndham council the green light to open four new ‘cells’ at the Werribee tip.
The state environment watchdog this morning announced it had granted a works approval to the council that will allow it to extend operations within the boundaries of its landfill site on Wests Road.
The council will now be able to build four new landfill ‘cells’ within the current tip – that will each be made up of multiple sub-cells – that can reach 22 metres above ground.
Wyndham council first lodged the application for a works approval in September last year, but approval was delayed after the EPA twice requested further information about the council’s plans. The EPA received more than 170 submissions on the application.
Development assessments manager Tim Faragher said the EPA considered a range of key issues raised during the assessment period including odour, noise, landfill gas, height and stability.
“The application has been through a number of revisions following community feedback through the assessment process and the council has provided further information to EPA as requested,” Mr Faragher said.
“The proposal in its final form meets the requirements of the Environment Protection Act 1970, and considered all relevant state environment protection policies and guidelines.”
