Werribee River Association wraps year up

The Werribee River Association has unveiled its new board for 2026 and a range of initiatives it will be partaking in.

The new look board will consist of Dann Halmovitch, Elliot Lewis, John Marks, Jasmine Thomas, Kathryn Williams, Muthu Pannirselvam, Robert Walsh, Tamara Reynolds and Jessica Deleeuw.

Ms Reynolds was announced the chairperson, with Elliot Lewis as vice chairperson and Kath Williams as secretary.

While the organisation will be closed from 23 December to 5 January, locals won’t have to wait long until the action begins again.

Kicking off the events calendar on 17 January will be a seaweed and shoreline discovery safari at Werribee South River mouth.

Between 10.30am – 12.30pm, experienced seaweed forager Chris Rockley will guide guests across the shoreline and educate them about what washes up, as well as how the average person can do their bit in keeping the area ecologically healthy.

A litter clean up activity will be held in tandem with the session.

Before closing the year, the volunteer organisation still has one important task– to name its new mascot, a taxidermied male platypus.

The unnamed platypus will play a vital role in community education about the endangered species that lives in the river.

Those wanting to join the competition can submit their name to info@werribeeriver.org.au by 30 December.

The team will pick a winner and announce it in February.
