Werribee recognised by tourism awards

Wyndham council has been announced as a finalist for the Victorian Tourism Awards for its ‘A Delightful Lil’ Detour’ campaign to promote visiting Werribee and surrounds.

Launched in November 2021, the movement sought to portray Werribee as a well positioned suburb that’s easy to get to with many attractions to visit.

Council’s destination Wyndham portfolio holder, councillor Heather Marcus, said she was “thrilled” to know the campaign had “raised the profile” of Werribee and surrounds.

“[Werribee has] lots to offer from animal encounters at the Werribee Open Range Zoo and outdoor adventures in Point Cook Costal Park, to enjoying local wines [and] lovely heritage sites,” Cr Marcus said.

“My favourite place is the Werribee River, and I certainly love the K-Road cliffs, but for a very exciting place to visit that you can not beat, is the beautiful Werribee Mansion and surrounding garden.

“It is delightful that we can invite the people to come here to Wyndham, spend the night, and see what we have in our city.”

Cr Marcus said Werribee combines the best of city, coastal and country areas.

“It’s beautiful because you can be in the suburb with many many houses, and just a short drive is the country,” she said.

“Just a drive around Werribee South amongst all those magnificent gardens and then before you know it, you’re on the coast.

“Werribee actually has everything.”

Despite all the attractions the suburb has to offer, Cr Marcus believe it’s the people that make the city great.

“We need to celebrate that, we have got so many beautiful cultures now, but we’re all one, and I think it’s lovely that we’ve got our people.”

Winners for the awards are announced on December 1, and Cr Marcus said she’s excited about the prospect of winning.

“We’re looking forward to getting the results, I think the staff have worked and I think competitions make people more aware of what we’ve got,” she said.
