The iconic Werribee Mansion will undergo $6 million upgrades to repair the roof, plumbing and drainage to improve the building’s resilience to weather events.
Werribee MP Tim Pallas and energy, environment and climate change minister Lily D’Ambrosio visited the mansion on June 16 to make the announcement.
Mr Pallas said the mansion was “vitally important” to the community and it was “one of those areas where people can relax”.
“The Wyndham community is going through enormous growth, but it’s good also to see that that growth is rooted in a sense of history and an appreciation that some of the greatest and most grand offerings that this state has to offer are right here in Werribee,” Mr Pallas said.
“Its also good to know that they’re going to be maintained and preserved for future generations.”
Mr Pallas said the mansion was one of the most visited tourism locations in the state.
“We’ve got wide open spaces, cultivated gardens…the rose garden, the zoo, the equestrian facilities,” he said.
“I think there’s a sense of pride to this community that it’s on their doorstep.”
Ms D’Ambrosio said it was important to upgrade significant historical sites to ensure they were able to withstand the tests of time.
“This is a fantastic part of the west….we know that it’s important for us to be able to continue to invest and upgrade these fantastic heritage sites that are much loved,” she said.
“We know that by doing that, we will be able to secure the future of these sites so that Victorians and other international visitors, tourists, can continue to enjoy these iconic heritage sites for many, many years to come.”
The funding is the largest ever single investment in Parks Victoria’s heritage assets and is expected to create 80 jobs over the four years the works will take place.
