Werribee lion a legend in own den

Merv Selzer knows more than most that little acts of kindness can have a big impact.

The Werribee man has spent more than 55 years as a member of service clubs, including the past 33 years with Werribee Lions.

During that time, he helped to run Werribee Park music festivals that attracted crowds of more than 10,000, was involved in the annual running of the Weerama Festival and, in 2006, went to East Timor to give assistance to families.

“To me, it’s a great way of meeting people – and you can give back to the community,” he said.

“A service club is like a big family.”

Adhering to the Lions’ motto of “we serve”, Mr Selzer has always been available to help those in the community who need a little helping hand, but admits that these days, it can be difficult for people to make the time to be part of their local service club.

“There’s so many demands of people’s time now,” he said.

Mr Selzer is one of many volunteers who will be honoured when the Werribee, Little River and Point Cook chapters of Lions get together on April 14 for a dinner-dance at Werribee Racecourse to celebrate the Lions International Centenary.
