Werribee Giants raise big for MND

The Werribee Giants Baseball club hosted a Big Freeze event on Sunday, May 29, and raised thousands of dollars for people suffering from motor neurone disease.

The fundraiser was held at Presidents Park in Wyndham Vale and Werribee Giants publicity officer Peter Rose said the event was “fantastic”.

“It was a really really successful event, we had over 200 people there including players, spectators and officials,” he said.

“Everybody really getting behind the cause…we raised over $2500…it was just a really good community event.”

“There was somber moments with people recalling their own experiences with MND as well as some really great moments, really good baseball and some really good, fun events,” Mr Rose said.

The money was raised through a BBQ lunch on the day, MND merchandise that could be purchased, a raffle people could participate in and via an online link.

An important part of the fundraiser is the ice bucket challenge that consists of people pouring cold, icy water over their heads.

“We had our president Bomber Worn as well as the Geelong Baseball association president Danny and their executive officer Tony McPherson, they all participated in the ice bucket challenge,” Mr Rose said.

Mr Rose said the club chose to host the fundraiser because it was very much “community focused”.

“It is very much a grassroots sport, our club is a real family club…they see the benefit in community and they see the need to put back into the community,” he said.

“I would encourage any clubs or any sport to do the same.”
