Werribee apartment plans lodged

Plans for another multi-million dollar, multi-storey apartment block in Werribee’s CBD have been lodged with Wyndham council.

The proposed $20 million development spans 5386 square metres over seven levels and includes 74 one- and two-bedroom apartments, 79 carparking spaces and two retail premises on the ground floor, set across two blocks in Cottrell Street, a few doors down from the Racecourse Hotel.

It’s too early to know if the planning application, which was lodged earlier this month, will be decided on by council officers or if the matter will go before a council meeting.

Wyndham council has approved about 14 planning permits for multi-storey buildings within Werribee’s city centre in the past 18 months. To date, a $15 million, 10-storey mixed-use apartment block along Watton Street is the tallest development approved for Werribee’s city centre.

This month, the council also approved plans for a seven-storey apartment block on Bridge Street.

The council received at least 24 formal objections to the original proposal and a petition signed by 120 people opposing the development, which will overlook single-storey houses on McDonald Street and neighbouring streets.

It’s likely future developments will reach even greater heights, with the Werribee city centre structure plan allowing development up to 20 storeys high in parts of Werribee’s CBD.

Despite mixed community sentiment to the high-rise developments, YPA Estate Agents Werribee director Bassam Tofaili said the height allowances around Werribee’s CBD had been a boon for property prices of late.

Mr Tofaili said a 487 square metre knock-down property along Bridge Street recently went under the hammer with a $600,000 reserve and sold for $678,000.

“The activity centre has been a hot area for buyers, even from the east, a lot of people are buying because you can do a multi-level development,” he said.
