Website promotes green living

Werribee brothers Lachlan and Oliver are big fans of their family’s chickens.

The siblings, aged eight and three years old, regularly help to feed the poultry.

And Wyndham council is hoping they’re not the only youngsters to make some feathered friends in their own backyard.

The council has launched a Green Living section of its Wyndham Together website, which was put together in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wyndham mayor Cr Josh Gilligan said the Wyndham Together website had been visited more than 21,000 times during April.

It includes several instructional videos with project ideas for households to take on during the coronavirus lockdown, including one called Building a Chook Run.

The 13-minute clip, presented by Gardening Australia, covers the value of having backyard chickens, what they do for the garden and how to build a run to keep them active and safe.

Other videos available on the Green Living page include native garden design, how to attract native bees to your garden, create a lizard lounge and autumn planting.

The page also includes a link to the Autumn Birds in Backyards Citizen Science Project, an initiative of BirdLife Australia.

The survey encourages residents to record the birds they see in their own yards, as part of a nationwide project.

Wyndham gardener Chiara Perri will present a series of Habitat Gardening videos via the Wyndham Together website every Wednesday until June 10, with top tips on plant species, creating your own frog bog and more.

Her video, Habitat Heroes: Create Your Own Habitat Garden, will be presented from 10-10.15am on May 27.
