Warriors shine at BMX state championships

Victoria’s best BMX riders descended on Hoppers Crossing earlier this month to battle it out in the 2017 Victorian BMX State Championships.

More than 550 riders – from kids to adults – competed in the three-day event, held at the Wyndham Warriors BMX Club’s home base at the Heathdale Glen Orden Wetlands.

The Warriors were in fine form throughout the competition, snaring a total 28 state plates. President Gary Morgan enjoyed a particularly good competition, coming first in the 50-plus men’s division and the 50-plus men’s cruiser division.

Other first-place getters included Ava Lazaridis (9 girls division), Alyssa James (19-24 women), Amanda Morgan (30-34 womens cruiser), Sienna Richmond (8-10 girls cruiser), Logan Lazaridis (retro junior 8-13) and Jamie Truran (masters).

Meanwhile, Truganina’s Cameron Gatt also won two state plates, coming first in the 9 boys division and placing second in the 8-10 boys cruiser event.

Cameron competes with Geelong Thunder BMX club and trains up to five times a week under the guidance of father and son team Fraser and Brandon Te Hiko.
