A long-time BMX racer will take to the world stage later this year after blitzing the competition at the recent national championships.

Wyndham Warriors BMX Club member Mandie Morgan is gearing up to compete in her first world titles, which will be held in South Carolina in July, after winning her division at the national championships in Brisbane recently.

Ms Morgan, 30, started her BMX career as a kid in the UK and won a couple of British nationals before hanging up her helmet at the tender age of eight.

Then, in 2011, the Point Cook resident asked her brother to build her a bike and she “got hooked” again.

Ms Morgan said she was thrilled when she finally made the cut for nationals.

“I’ve had five tries [at the national championship],” she said. “I’m working a lot on my mental headspace, so I tried to treat it like a normal event.

“There was a lot of unknowns, because you’re racing people from different states that you haven’t raced before, and you don’t know how fast they are until that very first gate drop.

“I just tried to think positive and go for it. I knew I’d put in all the hard work with all the training I’d been doing.”

Ms Morgan will compete in the 25-plus women’s (20 inch bike) division and the 30-39 women’s (24 inch bike) event.

Fellow Wyndham Warrior Sienna Richmond came in second at the national championships, Ava Lazaridis placed fifth in her first nationals attempt and Ms Morgan’s father, Gary, came in third.
